The Ancient House, Ipswich, also known as Sparrowes House, is a Grade I listed building dating from the 15th century located in the Buttermarket area. In 1980 the building was acquired by Ipswich Borough Council.
The building sports detailed pargeting, and also elaborate wood carvings around the front of the house. Four panels of pargeting show a Tudor impression of the world. The continents Africa, America, Asia and Europe are shown - notably lacking Australasia which was not discovered at the time.
Africa is represented by a naked man holding a spear, Asia by a horse and a mosque-like building, Europe by a woman with a horse and castle, and America by a man with a dog at his feet.
The front of the building as it can be seen today (in a restored state), was not an original feature of the building - it was later added by Robert Sparrowe between 1660 and 1670. It bears the Royal Arms of King Charles II, and the words "honi soit qvi mal y pense". This is old French for "shame upon him who thinks evil of it", and is also the motto of the Order of the Garter.

BERTJAN POT is a legendary dutch designer and in typical excellent dutch design style, he has created these thought invoking and thoroughly cool duct tape carpets. They are pretty visually amazing but also conceptually abstract. The kind of thing that no normal person would ever think of doing, and thats why i love this carpet SO much. And why i love dutch designers.

These pieces encapsulate everything I LOVE about TAPE. Quirkiness, abstract-ivity (is that a word?) and crafty kookiness.

Bertjan Pot created these pieces for Tent London (which is part of London design week) in 2007.

He says " The duct-tape is really molten into the textile so it won’t come off when using it as a carpet". Great point. I was wondering about that.

I really love that the duct tape used on this piece is cut into small strips, not disguising or attempting to transform the tape into anything else. Furthermore, the tape is stuck onto the carpet so it is still performing its main task which is to stick.

It is, arguably one of the best uses of duct tape i can imagine. Damien Hirst, go shove your dots.

If anyone has an old rug like this lying around, please bring it around to my place and you can use my multitude of duct tapes to create this for me for and give it to me for christmas.

As a fan of contemporary home design I like to see how architects challenge us and our perceptions of space, functionality and visual appeal. The Blairgowrie Court Residence is definite "eye candy" if you like to look at home pictures and see what creative minds have come up with. The first takeaway for me is the wide open feel of the entire decorative theme. Open space abounds much like what you would see in decorative minimalism. I cannot be certain without having stepped inside, but it looks as though concrete floors may adorn several of the rooms. If not concrete, then it is a dark tile pattern that looks very close to concrete. Nonetheless, this makes a statement by the home owners about their perception of contemporary home design.

Scoop is a new release from Gloster in their patio furniture line. Scoop features woven teak patterns criss-crossed across the frame of the chair or table. I find that woven chairs are more comfortable since the weave gives a little bit when sat upon. That extra give provides more cushioning for prolonged seating. The darker stain looks much like the color of coconuts drawing upon its island theme. The scoop is named from the shape of the chair in the back and seating area. I found this mural on www.norajohnson.blogspot.com. The artist painted this mural in a New York City townhouse. It is a Chinoiserie style mural which (according to Wikipedia) is a French term, signifying "Chinese-esque" reflecting chinese artistic influences. I love the tent style ceiling and the twisting sprouting trees.

I found the following two murals on a site called the Mural Resource Project which was created by the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design.

This first room is so subtle with the soft pastel colors. It is the perfect backdrop for the ivory dining room furniture and decorative chandelier.

I received my copy of Better Homes & Gardens, which is sent to me automatically since I'm subscribed to Decorating Inspiration, a good resource by the way, and I saw a major featured kitchen in this issue that was also on display at KBIS. I had taken photos of this kitchen, which are the top three, below. This issue is out now with lots of other images and information on this kitchen. It is the August issue.
The real point I want to make about this kitchen is to encourage my readers to consider its style. My sense, which I hope I can communite effectively, is that this is one of a "type" of kitchen style, that, is just that, about (kitchen) style alone. It's not about history, architecture, or about one's unique personality being reflected in the kitchen design.

It's simply all about how to style a kitchen, end of story. It's the kind of look that I know it when I see it! I've seen it many times before, and to me, it is a distinctive look, this all encompassing theme of "kitchen style," for style's sake. It's a really beautiful kitchen in many ways. It's not for me, personally, but then, I have the luxury to sit here and go into the nuances of all things kitchens and dissect it all! There are a good number of clever and interesting elements in this kitchen. It's beautiful in many ways, and certainly highly functional, but I cannot find the soul. It is subjective, don't forget that. AND, after all, it's a "set" kitchen, made to showcase products' versatilities, which it does quite well.
