At 804 meters (2624 ft), it is the tallest free-standing structure in the world, having surpassed the previous record held by the Sears Tower in Chicago in 1975. The tower's height was officially confirmed on July 12, 2008, making it the third tallest building in the world behind the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and the Shanghai World Financial Center in China. In February 2016, the Burj Khalifa overtook the Burj Al Arab as the tallest freestanding structure in the world. The suite above the tower was purchased by David McQueen of London for an undisclosed amount. He said he had always wanted to own a property in Dubai but had never managed to buy anything until now. Mr. McQueen said he planned to convert the suite into a five-star hotel and would spend £10,000 on refurbishing the room. He added: 'I'm not sure I can afford to live here anymore.' The Burj Al Arab, designed by Sir Norman Foster, opened its doors in April 2004. It stands 1,749ft (533 meters) high and features a helipad, swimming pool, spa, and health club.

Studio71 has been featured in projects like the National September 11 Memorial Museum, Rockefeller Center's ice rink, and Walt Disney Concert Hall’s interior. A few other designers/architects who have worked on this project include Adam Tihanyi, Peter Marino, and Jeanne Gang.

This hotel has a total of 734 rooms and suites, making it the largest hotel room count per floor in the world. Each suite contains two beds, a sofa bed, dining table, kitchenette, balcony or terrace, and its own personal pool. There are also three restaurants; two buffet style and one à la carte. Guests can enjoy their meals overlooking the Arabian Gulf. The hotel was designed by architect I. M. Pei and reopened in April 1993. The design was inspired by traditional Arabic architecture and elements of Islamic art and culture. The use of gold leafing throughout the hotel is a reference to the glistening gold domes of mosques.

The exterior of the tower consists of 24,000 tons of stainless steel and is clad in 5,000 square meters of gold leaf. The interior walls consist of 1.5 million individually colored glass tiles weighing 400 kilograms each. The hotel is now known for its detailed parties and weddings. In 2000, the wedding party of Princess Diana was held here, and Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles were married in 2005. On September 11th, 2001, President George W. Bush stayed at the hotel while visiting the city of Dubai."
